Deck/Hull Assembly: After being allowed to "set up" for several hours (usually overnight), we remove the newly manufactured fiberglass parts from their molds and gather them for assembly. Before it is attached to the hull, the deck component is fitted with white polystyrene, which serves as a floatation element. Polystyrene does not absorb water and will not easily disintegrate over time. In addition to polystyrene, we also add polyurethane to increase floatation. Polyurethane consists of two liquids that, when mixed together, quickly expands into a foam substance that soon solidifies. We mix the polyurethane and very quickly pour the solution into the centerboard truck cavity of the deck. As the hull is lowered and attached to the deck, the foam expands to fill every air pocket. When the foam solidifies, it joins the hull and deck into a solid unit.
Finishing Process: Once the deck and hull have been married, the boat is moved to our finishing area. Here, we install the mast, sails, rubrails, teak woodwork, motor brackets, etc. We are proud of the fact that all of our fiberglass fittings and teak components are manufactured at our facilities. This ensures that the entire boat…from the hull to the teak flooring options…meet the high Bauteck standards for which we are known. Once the fittings have been installed, we prepare the boat for shipment. The oars and mast are carefully packed into the hull, any teak fittings are given a protective wrapping, and the entire boat is sealed in plastic wrap. Finally, the finished bauer is loaded into a truck and shipped.
The Salad Bar Bauer: As you have seen on these pages, the Bauteck manufacturing process is very labor intensive. Our boats are built entirely by hand from the ground up! Unlike larger manufactures who mass-produce their vessels, we have a tremendous amount of flexibility in our building process. We encourage our customers to tell us what they want…we can customize your order to suit nearly any requirement. In fact, over the years, we’ve accommodated a few highly unusual requests. We once modified our bauer 10 design so that the hull could be used as a salad bar in a seafood restaurant! There was also a bauer 10 built with specially modified sails and permanently moored in a golf course pond—as a wind indicator! Your needs might not be as exotic as these, but we encourage you to use your imagination when ordering your bauer dinghy. Perhaps you’d like for us to use an exotic wood for trim, or would like for us to make the boat handicapped-accessible. Maybe you have a unique hull or sail color in mind. Whatever your need, we’d like the opportunity to build it for you! |
